Presidential escort car goes overboard at West Dem
July 6, 2010 | By KNews | Filed Under News
- police arrest unauthorized drunk driver

A Presidential security car, escorting Prime Minister, Sam Hinds, plunged overboard yesterday at Hague, West Coast Demerara after reportedly being forced off the road.
The Prime Minister, who is performing the duties of the President, was just returning from a visit to the electricity installations on West Demerara where he checked on the operations of two stations of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), following complaints of severe power outages over the weekend. Kaieteur News understands that the Security Advance Party (SAP) car, a black Toyota Mark 11, which would normally lead the Presidential escort to clear the public roads, was approaching the Hague Bridge Den Amstel, when a blue Toyota Spacio, PLL 6095, heading the opposite direction –west– did not heed the sirens.
It caused the SAP vehicle to veer off the wet road where it slid into the fast moving waters below.
None of the security officials were visibly injured and the Prime Hinds, who was scheduled to visit flood-hit Grove/Diamond villages, East Bank Demerara, stopped to assess the damage.
Police ranks gave chase behind the Spacio which was blamed for the accident and found it locked in the Cornelia Ida Housing Scheme, but there were no signs of the driver.
However, police later said that they had arrested the driver of the car. He was tested for alcohol and he was tested far in excess of the allowable level. The owner of the car claimed that she had earlier left the car at a wash bay to be cleaned.
It is believed that the wash bay worker then took the car for a ride but instead found himself in hot water.
