I left West Coast in 1975 after spending a lot of time at CI, Anna Catherina, Leonora and Uitvlugt. I went to schools at West Demerara and briefly in Georgetown before leaving for Canada.

One little community effort I fondly remember is the moving of furniture from the temporary school near the Masjid at Leonara to the current primary school. Although I was a young kid, my classmates and I carried desks and benches to our new school. It seemed like a monumental task back then for students. It was, for the joy of successful completion lingers on!

Some of my classmates were the late Terrence Bashir, Sarita Chand, Baichan Singh, Dhandai Heera, Hetridai Persaud, Elsie Singh, Ramanand Persaud, Seeta Gobin, Nadir Hussain, Bramanand Jogai, Danny Samaroo, Rafiq Bacchus, Balkisoon Bisoondial, Rudy Orilall, Bal Kisten Morgan, Rafia Khan, Nazreen Yar, Hemadrie Pooran, Nafeeza Ally and I could go on and on.

That was a long time ago and I still remember all those classmates. I have only seen one or two of them since Common Entrance at Leonora. The fact that I remember them speaks volumes because I only spent one year at Leonora school. The students were smart and the teachers were very good.

The teacher whose name has been repeated many times in my life has been "Ben R". Mr.Moses had a long history with my family since his earlier years in Essequibo, when he was just starting his career, and my uncle coached and guided him. He was instrumental in accepting myself and brothers as students on transfer from CI school.

My other teachers at Leonora, who were kind and helpful were Mr. Emamudin Hussein (he had a very neat handwriting), Mr. Gingah Kowlessar ( saw him in 1992), Janayman, Murdwag Singh and Miss Irene Jagdar. They were all young and gave their hearts to their students. I will be forever indebted to the teachers at Leonora.

You may be wondering why I have not said much about my first primary, CI school. Well I have to say it was not a pleasant experience. I skipped two classes (jumped a class as they say) and ended up with kids who were older than myself. I was talkative and was bullied relentlessly by two older chaps at CI school. Keith Y. and Patrick A., bless you wherever you are!:) I made wonderful friends at Leonora.

I would be remiss if I did not mention some of pleasantries of CI school. As a little boy it was nice to see the emerging cricketing talents of Buns and DabyChan at CI. Back then, Buns seemed faster than Lillee:D. I developed my love for cricket from those early days at CI.

After so many years, and so many teachers, I still reflect on some of the teachers back at WCD. And I reflect on the many talented classmates. Teachers made a lot less money but taught with a lot of heart. They produced brilliant students, many who never enjoyed the opportunity to grace the schools of North America.

Mr. Rupert Gobin and Mr. Arnold Lochan (and Mr. Harold Chee-a-tow, although he never taught me) of Zeeburg Secondary provided life long skills to their students. The fruits of their labor are behind this forum.:)

So let's hear about your school, work, community. Any thing decent goes!

Cheers

Or
Get an aerial view of the Leonora Market area. Here, I went to school for Common Entrance; here, I played clik-clik at lunch and recess; here, for the first time I had that initial spark of attraction we young boys called LOVE and here, in this vicinity I born at the old Leonora Hospital.
