Sure I remember Daag!

That fellow used to hate wearing a shirt and I believe he was epileptic as well. He lived next door to Mal's shop and "limed" a lot by the school bridge. I sometimes went to his house to ask his brother Keoma [some say kumma] for water spice mangoes that grew with abundance in the yard.

Daag was kinda unfortunate in the sense that his eldest brother sent for the family to live in Connecticut but he unfortunately passed away by road accident I believe.

I met Keoma in NY about 8-10 yrs ago.

Talking about Mal's shop, I remembered something that used to occur every time I bought his Mauby or Pine Drink. Always I would go home with chapped lips and a sore throat, until one day after downing the last of the mauby from the glass I noticed a thick ring of residue at the bottom of the glass.

I also got that same effect from the cane juice stand in front of Astro cinema. Since then I try to avoid those kinda places.

I also remember Squee. He was a skinny dude that looked more or less like a Rocker or a Hippee.

I was a few years younger that him when I sometimes walked past their yard on my way to school. I only said hello to him then, although later on we met up in the beer gardens before he went away to live in Canada.

I know his father had a blue waggon-type car from which he sold materials for clothing and other trinket stuff. Once he had some small action hero figures made from rubber and they hung from elastic strings inside the car. My mom bought me the Batman and shortly afterwards I bit off the head because the rubber smelled like candy.

I wanted to get another one but when I asked Squee's father how much it cost, he told me 75 cents. I saved for over ten weeks before I was able to buy another Batman because, as soon as my savings reached about fifty cents, I would go to the corner shop and buy a 1 lb brown bag full of Burnham's Balls.

Burnham Balls was a candy that had a texture similar to that of Rock-and-Roll. I don't know if you remember that sweet [rock-and-roll] but it was longish [3 - 4 inches] and looked "hard" until you put it in your mouth and finds out it dissolves quickly.

So, think of Burnham's Balls in that sense but it was round [appx. 1 3/4" in diameter] in shape.

There was also another version of it but, that one was very hard and I believe it was called Gatta [some of the guys /gals might do better with the spelling]. That type more or less was jaw-breakers.

i dont rem whhere mal's shop was......

here is a lil story about daag...

wheni used to saty with kamo..sheused to secretly watch me from her bedroom as i went to sch and retnd...esp becuase of the 'bad' guys who used tolimeon that bridge..

so 1 day daag decided to say soemthing as i crossed thebridge onmy way home...

as i got near to kamo's gate..i saw her rushing outof the yard with a BEETAH..very angry..

by the timeo reached at the top of stairs , i hear her angry voice...truned around and saw her running after daag....

she caugth him and it looked like she was really going tohit him..but she just gave him a good 'busing'..like i was  a decent  girl etc and my parents were sendingme for and education..that hemust look for other girls to interfere etc etc...

well..needless to say dag hadnothingbut respect forme after that..as a matter of fact..he used to tell his  friends 9loud enough forme to hear..) that i was 'aunty kamo's family and theymsut not tellme anything...

a few yrs after i laft sch..i revisted kamo and spent sometime there..and she told me that after i had left sch daag andher became good friends...but that dagg had died in an accident....

ps...i was very blessed to have someone like kamo lookingout for me..will write about the time ilived with her family..but in another thread...

she was very good to me..esp i was onlyher sister's friend...

she is one of the persons who touched my life in meaningful way!!!

about squee..ithink his mom or dad had a sewing school at their home....many young girls used to go there..and they hadmany sewingmachines intheir lower flat...

squee is  in california now...

I met Mr. Pagasse M some years ago in Edmonton. They moved to Toronto. His daughter tell me Kakoo used to give him a cup at the shop. Apparently, PM ate some of the glasses. I heard that back home but never believed it.
