class=Red3CIOG BUILDS TWO HOMES FOR LEGUAN RESIDENTS
class=GrayGuyana Chronicle / September 22nd, 2003
class=BlackThe Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (CIOG), in collaboration with Guyana Sawmills and Baracara Quarries, has built two more homes for poor and destitute families.
In a press statement, CIOG said the homes were built on the island of Leguan, in the Essequibo River. One of the homes was built at Maryville for Mr. Aroolah Baksh, who has a wife and three children.
Baksh operates a horse cart as a means of earning a living but finds that difficult to make ends meet. The home built for him by the two organizations cost $300,000.
The other home was built for Pearl Gafoor at Endeavour, also on Leguan. Gafoor is blind and has a daughter and two grandchildren to care for.
She has no source of income. She lives by the donations of generous people. Her home also was built at the cost of $300,000.
The Central Islamic Organization of Guyana is appealing to the general public to contribute to "Housing the Poor," a CIOG-coordinated project.
The organization says contributions can be made to its head office at M.Y.O. Building, Woolford Avenue.

Lio (Lionel) Murray taught at G/Park ...but then we were just in form one or maybe 2.
May years have passed since.
I attach a picture of our favorite LUKANANI which is presently moored on the off shore of Rosignol, not far fromthe ferry stelling and has been bought by a private sawmiller.
What a historical waste!

Thanks for the photo, Abul..... ....well ,this pic surely stirred up some emotions... and a whole lot of memories..wonderful ones!!!
Whenever u go to Leguan..please take photos of the stelling and what's left of St. Peters church....thanks in advance, my dear friend!
Thanks for the contract too...i still have my photo from one of my contracts.taken in 1974 by the famous Leguan photographer..Roland..I remember him coming home to my brother's place at Enterprise.....had me sit in a chair to take that photo...with 2 longs 'fat' plaits (braids) pulled infront of me...tied half-way with black rubber bands cut-outs from bicycle tubes. and my hair was straight-straigth then...( my older girlis encouraged by this pic..she loves curly hair but hers is extremely straight....so she has hopes of hers becoming curly later on in her life..like mine did... ..lol)
( and b4 anyone laughs at the invented rubber bands let me say this.....this was good stuff..it didnt 'cut-up' one's hair like the regular rubber bands did..so my hair was never damaged when i removed these rubber bands...lol. .........
I wish i knew who came up with this idea..not only was it good for the hair..but it didnt cost me a penny because we had bicycles in those days and we just saved the damaged bicycle tubes!!!)
Abul, now i have the contract to go with the pic..
nevermind that yr contract was 1 yr later... Thanks a million !!!

I know Ms. Mohamed (yep you had her first name correct) - I am good friends with her brother and nephews in Leguan. We are from the same village. She now resides in Brooklyn.
I do not know what became of David, but we travelled together on the ferry. He was a year or two ahead of me at ZbGSS, his younger brother Michael was in my class.
Lionel Murray now resides in Canada, older brother of Kelvin.
Lawrence? Might his last name be Fanfair?
