i used to go with my parents and brothers..
i used to get the smller ones...using the chimtah....
we took them home and loose the crabs in the steel drums and put eddo leaves for them..
and whilst we were there..my dad got lovely papoose for me!!!
then wehave to kill and clean allthe crabs..suing the polythene brushes..scrubbed the legs and backs etc...
hard work..then we boil them in a big pot ...with coconut milk....hmmmm!!!!
that wasnite time..
then earlynorn ..same work..to cook a whole big cahari of curry crabs...
adnmy dad used to crack the 'tenteh' with hammer forme..becuase they were so huge..and hard!!
that was ages ago though..i dont think i went to dauntless after i started high sch...
all the west dem folks used to come over with their fishing boats to catch crabs too....
VJ..

Westcoast crab area was somewhere near Ruimzeight. A friend told me then went to catch crab. Here is what they did:
Bring two cars when it was very dark. Turn on the head lights on one. Open di trunk and put one basket in the di adah car. Put a board from the ground to the trunk. The went drinking and allowed the crabs to march up the board into the basket, in the trunk. they closed the basket, lock the trunk and drove home. My friend swears by the story.
Lang time CI and Uitvlugt has monkey apple and crab bush. All gaan! Too sad.

this sounds so much easier that what we did....
sometimes the crab didnt march very well..and the guys would put their hands int he holes to get the crabs..
they had some good 'bites' too...

VJ: if anyone believes Ravi's story, they stupit, West Dem crab stupit, or both!!!
Jane: After you put the crab in the drums, u have to watch how they behave. Like most Guyanese... all wanting to climb up and out at the same time but instead climb on each other and pull each other to the bottom of the barrel again. B4 long, they are all at the bottom walking over each other.
Actually, this king of behaviour has been called Crab Antics by one anthropologist who did a study of Caribbean societies and used this as his title.
B4 mi offend anybody, mi know na all abi a the same kin a crab!! Some are bundaree, some are shariga, some lost dem tenteh, some a bird crab, and some even claim to be Alaskan!
Mek u choice.

Na(m)an..
yes..i should have mentioned that..
it was fascinating watching how the crabs behaved..
i remember my sister and i even chose 'our' crabs..to see which one will 'win'....and we would just stand there watching them......until we grew tired..since everytime wethoguth our crab was getting to the top..it just went back tothe bottom..
but what was also amazing..they never stopped trying..it was an on going process..
maybe us humans can learn fromthat too..never to give up..but persevere...
huh, Na(m)an>??????
yes..u r so correct...us humans r like that..we will climb on each others back to get to the top..and even if we cant get to the top..we will try to pull down those who r ahead of us!!!
but we are HUMAN beings....!!!!
...thing is we r supposed to be diff from animals( not only crabs...)..but itmakes me wonder sometimes..!!!

Travelling daily on the Lukanani (Now bought by a privateer of Rosignol), thence on train ..eventually coming off at the De Willem paltform bring back good memories.
Remember we used to eat the baby jamoon (eh Jane??) from the brushes on the sideline dam on the way to De Willem railway station .
Pineapples were a cent a peice or sometimes penny.
we used to return to leguan inthe company of a host of other students attending Mahaba Sabha Sec, Stewartville sec and other schools...so it was a merry thing to travel daily from legaun to Zeeburg.
The legaun stelling has now lost its glory and Prika isnot any better.
I learnt that Zeeburg is not as it used to be too....Have to visit soon someday.
Jane add Sukhul to the list of our classfellows and Fazeela Baksh (my cousin)

| I dont remember Rajaram ...but I remember Irene Jagdar. When she stayed in leonora she lived a few ddors from Heera and Imam Hussein. I think she and janay-man used to teach Std. 4b and Imam used to teach 4A. That's where i first met Squee.
